I'm not yet sure what to title this, so we'll see how it comes out. I was listening to the radio yesterday and they were discussing the ego-centric music of today. I don't listen to newer music much, but more and more artists are singing about how great they are. People are so busy thinking of themselves they don't want to be inconvenienced by the needs of others, yet they need others approval; if others think less of them than they think of themselves, it is a crushing blow.
The reflection of this in society is everywhere. I hate driving the kids to school because parents park in the loading zones or don't bother pulling over to the curb so others can get by. The traffic jam often caused is dangerous. Everyday one daughter comes home upset about the inconsiderate sixth graders at her school. My oldest is frustrated by the lack of courtesy at the high school; she has gone to administration to complain about the lack of respect in one of her classes.
But this lack of respect is not universal. My daughters had orchestra zone concert at the high school this evening. I dropped them off early, we hung around so we didn't have to fight for parking. I planned to be one of the last ones out so I could miss the mass exodus, but my three year-old was throwing a tantrum. So I loaded kids in the car
I got into line to exit the parking lot. When I came to another area I watched as three cars failed to let another into the line; I'd already decided I would let it in if they didn't. When we came to the exit drive, I watched as several cars let the cars in my row into theirs. Only one driver failed to let someone else in before driving forward! I was on my way home in less than five minutes!
I'm grateful to those people who were willing to think of others when they were probably tired and dealing with tired kids, too. I'm grateful there are still courteous people; it's nice to know there are still people who still have charity.
